Our Heritage

Northpoint was established in 1976, when there was a gap in the market for quality protective coatings for metal parts in the engineering and industrial application sectors.

Originally based in Altrincham, Northpoint quickly built a strong reputation for the quality of powder coatings and application process, combined with a quick turnaround time; two aspects of the Northpoint business model that remain at the core of what we do.

Continued growth led to a new facility in Trafford Park in the early 1980’s and, in 1987, Northpoint moved to the site in Dukinfield, Cheshire, where it continues to operate today. In the mid 1990’s, Gary Howse became Managing Director, leading the business from strength to strength and continuing to build on the solid reputation for quality powder coating.

It was at this time that Northpoint changed focus to growth within the fence coating market, winning significant contracts for projects including the fencing surrounding the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant. Northpoint also became established as an expert in deep fluid bed coating of pipes and pipe fittings (FBE coating); two key services that remain a prominent part of our service offering.

In 2007, a board of Directors was formed to take over the business and drive growth in the existing markets. These four Directors, Garry Marshall, Simon Quiligotti, Philip Dawson and Howard Tomes, worked diligently to steer Northpoint through commercially challenging years, emerging stronger and more focused.

Fast-forward to 2019 when the four Northpoint Directors decided that the company should belong to its dedicated employees. Northpoint became an Employee Ownership Trust, which is now headed by Managing Director Gary Marshall, Director Tony Holt, Operations Director Phil Butterworth and Financial Director Simon Quiligotti.

Northpoint continues to strive to be the supplier of choice for quality powder coating and metal treatment services. The core of our business remains FBE coating, fence coating, sheet metal coating, thermal stripping, wet paint services and shot blasting.
