Powder Coating Pretreatment

Powder coating is a popular alternative to traditional liquid painting due to its durability, colour range, and environmental friendliness. However, an important aspect of successful powder coating is pretreatment, including the use of demineralised water.

Firstly, it is important to understand what demineralised water is. Demineralised water is a purified form of water, whereby all ions and minerals are removed through a process known as “deionisation”, Northpoint use Reverse Osmosis (RO) units to achieve this. This results in water that is highly pure and free from minerals that can interfere with the coating process.

The presence of surface minerals can cause several issues that affect the quality of powder coating. Minerals such as iron, calcium, and magnesium can cause poor coating adhesion, premature rust, and eventual paint chipping. These minerals can also decrease the lifespan of the coating, leading to costly re-coating.

Demineralised water is crucial in powder coating pretreatment because it removes any minerals that may be present on the surface of the substrate. The water is used to make-up chemical pretreatment solutions that clean the surface of any dirt, oils, and grease as well as prepare and seal the substrate surface and then rinse the prepared substrate. When the surface is free from minerals, it creates a cleaner, smoother surface that increases adhesion and promotes coating longevity.

Using demineralised water during the coating process helps to create an ideal surface for bonding and adhesion with the powder coating material. By eliminating minerals, the powder coating material can bond more effectively to the surface, creating a perfect finish.

Another significant benefit of using demineralised water in powder coating pretreatment is its eco-friendliness. During powder coating, excess water runoff can contaminate the environment with harmful chemicals and pollutants. By using demineralised water, it limits the environmental impact and ensures safe wastewater management.

Overall, the use of demineralised water in the powder coating process is a significant step towards protecting the environment and promoting sustainable practices in the coating industry. By reducing harmful pollutants, minimising the use of solvents and chemicals, and limiting energy consumption, demineralised water provides a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable alternative for powder coating pretreatment.
